Review by Cam Banks for Bubba Dummy II Jiu Jitsu Judo Grappling Dummy
Rating:
I’ve had a Bubba dummy since ’03, and it’s really great for when you see a move on a video or on the net that you want to try. Much easier than trying to get a cooperative partner who’ll let you mangle him while you figure the move out. I surprise my partners all the time in class with new moves I’ve learned on the dummy (but then I teach it to them too). Also great for practicing drills on.
For me, I’m about 6′ and 155 pounds so I find the Bubba dummy a little too heavy at 60 lbs; it’s like they say, dead weight is a big difference from live weight. After I’ve been under it for a few minutes, I’m like “get off of me!”. Ideally I’d like to be about 15 pounds lighter. Also, the neck is a little large and hard, which makes it a bit painful to attack with chokes (but like I said, I’m bony – for you it might be perfect). Probably it softens up if you use it a lot, but I tend to just learn the move and then take it to class. Durability of the foot coverings could be better too, since they’re basically socks (replaceable) – they bear the brunt of Bubba being dragged around so they get worn through pretty quickly even on a mat.
Anyway, that’s why I only give it 4 stars. But if you’re thinking you need one of these, you’re probably right, and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Also, Bubba’s being made professionally now, so the model you get may be improved.
